Why Is My Flight Delayed?

A delayed flight can be so frustrating. It’s completely out of our hands, but all we can do is sit around the airport and think: why is the flight delayed? Why is this happening to me? Why can’t I just be on holiday right now?! Why, why, why?!

To put your mind at ease, here are the most common reasons for a delay.

Weather Conditions
The weather at the departure airport, at the destination airport or en route can all affect a flight schedule. A passing thunderstorm or sudden heavy snow fall, even if only short, can create a backlog of delayed flights because the interval between take-offs can’t be shortened. Sometimes if its really cold your aircraft may need de-icing before you fly!

Traffic
Many things can cause disruptions in air traffic. Congestion sometimes means planes have to circle around the airport until they are allowed to land. The confusing thing is that often these flights will have arrived, and their status will say so on the boards, despite the fact that they are still in the sky!

Go Around
This doesn’t happen often, but when you’re on a flight that does this you will certainly know about it. The pilot may decide it’s not safe to land and will increase the altitude of the plane again. It will have to be flown back around in order to land, which will cause a delay of (usually) around half an hour.

Mechanical Issues
The odd problem is bound to crop up when dealing with such large machines as airplanes, and of course, we’d all rather they work properly every time than something go wrong because of a fault being overlooked. If an aircraft has a mechanical issue whilst on the ground then it will delayed leaving and its schedule at the arrival airport will also be delayed. If the aircraft encounters a problem whilst in the air, however, it will often have to be rerouted to another airport so that it can work out the mechanical problem before getting on its way.
