Faster, Better, Stronger: The Future of Flight

Back to the Future: The Delorean Time Machine

Flying into the Future...

The 21st of October, 2015 was the day the future became the past. It was the day we surpassed the ‘future’ depicted in Marty McFly’s adventure in the 1989 film Back to the Future Part II. The movie imagined that in 2015 we would have hoverboards, holographic advertising and self-tying shoes. Not to mention the famous flying cars… Yet here we are in 2016 and there’s not a flying car in sight.

What will technology bring for flight instead?

Well, NASA is working on a Quiet Supersonic Technology, which will fly at Mach 1.4 (approximately 1700 km per hour). This is almost twice as fast as a Boeing 747 and theoretically, at that speed, you could fly from London to New York in two hours!

Boeing has also been working on a new model, called the X-51A Waverider, which uses its own shockwaves for compression lift and flies at hypersonic speed. During test flights this model reached Mach 5.1 (around 6300 km per hour). London to New York would be reduced to just over half an hour. Great scott- that’s fast!

Better fuel efficiency, more environmentally friendly materials, modernised customer facilities and, of course, less delays are what we are hoping will be in store for the future of flight. And, one day, it would be nice to have our own flying cars à la Marty McFly! Maybe without a flux capacitor and time travel though... we all saw how much trouble that got him in!

If you were unlucky enough to have been delayed, a flight has been cancelled or you’ve been denied boarding, then don’t wait for time travel to be invented, go to Get Paid When Delayed to start your claim!
