Romantic Europe: Destinations for Valentine's Day

Mon, 02/13/2017

Valentine’s Day is a great time to pack your suitcase and head off on an adventure, may it be with your better half, friends or braving it as a lone wolf, the 14th of February is smack in the middle of winter, meaning it’s the off-season for lots of European holiday destinations. Although you might not get to enjoy the warmest weather, going away for Valentine’s means both avoiding the summer crowds and saving yourself money, as flights and hotels tend to be cheaper around this time than during the summer months. In Europe we are lucky enough to have some of the most beautiful and romantic cities just a couple of hours flight away!

Rome has to be top of any list of romantic getaways. The city is steeped in history and of course, this place is the origin of the word ‘romance’, so where better to spend Valentine’s day than exploring the piazzas, seeing the world-famous sights, sharing gelato and strolling cobblestone streets in the Eternal City.

In the words of Audrey Hepburn: Paris is always a good idea. The food here is some of the best in Europe, there’s always something to see and do, whether it’s the Louvre, Eiffel Tower, Montmartre or the Wall of Love, Paris will make you feel like saying “Je t’aime”.

Venice is iconic when it comes to romantic getaways. Its architecture and gondola rides are sure to make you fall in love with the city, whether travelling alone or with a partner. See the Piazza San Marco and the Basilica San Marco, take a ride on the Grand Canal and marvel at the Floating City.

Verona is another Italian city that had to make our list. Not only is Verona an UNESCO World Heritage Site, it’s also the setting of Shakespeare’s most famous play; home to the star crossed lovers Romeo and Juliet.

Ljubljana is the pleasant and peaceful capital of Slovenia. The city is full of green spaces, quaint cafes and the nearby lake Bled is stunning too.

This Greek island juts out of the Meditterranean like an iced cake. Santorini’s white Cycladic houses spread across the cliffs are out-of-this-world and the sunsets here are to die for.

Rent a house boat and enjoy discovering the historic canals. Do as the locals do and hop on a bike, it’s the best way to see the city. Feel gezelligheid (see Dutch dictionary!) by buying tulips, lingering with a coffee (which the Dutch do very well!), people watching and ambling Amsterdam’s many museums.

Happy Valentine’s Day!
