We've come a long way since the first manned flight, which was made in a hot air balloon at the Palace of Versailles, France. Below we've compiled a timeline of the history of flight, which goes up to the present day!

1783- First balloon launched in France

1785- First successful crossing of English Channel in a Hot Air Balloon

1848- Successful construction of first power-driven model airplane in England

1852- Steam driven airship flown over Paris

1903- Wright Brothers make first controlled flights in USA

1906- First officially recorded European flight in Paris

1912- Harriet Quimby is the first woman to fly across the English Channel

1914- First scheduled flight with a paying passenger

1919- First Atlantic crossing by air

1919- First international mail flight from Seattle to Vancouver by Bill Boeing

1924- First around the world flight, as well as first transpacific flight (Seattle to Seattle)

1932- Amelia Earhart became the first woman to fly solo across the Atlantic  

1939- First successful helicopter flight

1939- American Airlines opened first ever airport lounge

1944- Signing of the Chicago Convention, establishing rules and regulations for aircraft, airspace and safety

1947- Chuck Yeager, US Air Force, breaks the sound barrier

1970- Boeing 747 first commercial flight

1992- First Open Skies Agreement between USA and the Netherlands

2005- European Commission Regulation 261 established rules on compensation and assistance to passengers in the event of denied boarding, cancellation or long delays
